About this VAT calculator

A VAT calculator works out value-added tax — known as GST in Australia, New Zealand and Canada — so you can add it to a net price, strip it out of a gross price, or just see the tax portion on its own. Pick a country preset or type any custom rate and the net, tax and gross figures update instantly.

The maths is simple but easy to get wrong: adding VAT multiplies the net amount by (1 + rate), while removing VAT divides the gross amount by (1 + rate) — you can't just subtract the percentage. This tool handles both directions correctly. People use it to:

Everything runs locally and in-browser — your amounts are never sent to a server, nothing is stored, and there's no sign-up.

How to use
  1. Pick a mode: Add Tax (start with the pre-tax/net price), Remove Tax (start with the inclusive/gross total), or Tax Amount Only.
  2. Select a country preset (AU 10%, UK 20%, NZ 15%, CA 5%) or click Custom % to enter your own rate.
  3. If you chose Custom %, type the rate into the Rate % box that appears.
  4. Type the dollar amount — the net, tax and gross results update live as you type.
  5. Click any result box to copy that value straight to your clipboard.
FAQ

VAT (value-added tax) is a consumption tax added to the price of most goods and services at each stage of the supply chain, with the final cost borne by the consumer. It's called GST (goods and services tax) in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and several other countries, but works the same way.

Multiply the net amount by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. At 20% VAT, $100 net becomes $100 × 1.20 = $120 gross, with $20 of VAT. Use the Add Tax mode and the calculator does it for you.

Divide the gross (inclusive) price by 1 plus the rate — never just subtract the percentage. At 20% VAT, $120 ÷ 1.20 = $100 net, with $20 of VAT. Subtracting 20% from $120 would give $96, which is wrong. Use the Remove Tax mode to do it correctly.

To add VAT: gross = net × (1 + rate/100), and VAT = net × rate/100. To remove VAT: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate/100), and VAT = gross − net. For example at 10%, the divisor when removing tax is 1.10.

Rates vary by country: Australia GST is 10%, New Zealand GST is 15%, Canada GST is 5%, and UK VAT is 20%. Across the EU standard VAT rates range from roughly 17% to 27%. Use the Custom % option for any rate not in the presets.

No. VAT is collected in stages across the whole supply chain, with businesses reclaiming the tax they pay on inputs, so only the value added at each step is taxed. US-style sales tax is charged once, at the final point of sale to the consumer. Both end up paid by the consumer, but the mechanism differs.

Thresholds vary by country. In Australia you must register for GST once annual turnover reaches $75,000 ($150,000 for non-profits). The UK VAT registration threshold is £90,000. Once registered you must charge the tax on invoices, collect it, and remit it to the tax authority.
