Use PNG for logos, icons, and screenshots where you need crisp edges or transparency. Use JPEG for photographs, where it gives the smallest file at good quality. Use WebP when you want both transparency and a small size for the web.
PNG, BMP, and ICO are lossless, so the pixels are preserved. JPEG and WebP are lossy and use the quality slider — keeping it high, around 90, keeps the result close to the original while still saving space.
PNG, WebP, and ICO keep transparency intact. When you export to JPEG or BMP, which cannot store transparency, the converter fills transparent areas with the background colour you choose in the options panel.
